It’s not always the first thing that springs to mind when you think about Nissan, but they have had a fair chunk of success in GT racing, going all the way back to the ’70s. So with the ‘Limited Edition’ being one of the car makers’ favourite marketing tools, there is a certain logic in looking back to the ’70s for inspiration for the latest limited edition Nissan 370Z – the Nissan 370Z GT Edition. For those old enough – or for Nissan Z Car nutters – the retro graphic on the side will bring to mind the early Datsun 240Z.
BMW and Toyota have signed a binding agreement to co-develop a new sports car and continue with co-developed and shared technology. The way forward for car makers seems to be either to be as big as possible for the benefits of economy of scale, or to work together on joint products to cut development costs. We did speculate back in June that Volkswagen were planning on giving the new VW Beetle some butch credentials by endowing it with a new performance range-topper – the VW Beetle R. And today at Frankfurt the new hot Beetle takes a bow. VW are dubbing the Beetle R Concept, but it’s clear that they want the new Beetle to be perceived as more appealing to men as well as women; to those who enjoy the drive as well as to those who buy a car to make a style declaration.
